Bodies in Motion; Bodies at Rest: A Dance Film Workshop

    Posted 4/8/09

    MAY 14 Thursday 6-9:30 PM
    MAY 16 Saturday 9 AM-5 PM
    MAY 17 Sunday 9 AM-5 PM

Most dance films try to film dance that is choreographed for stage. This presents inherent creative challenges: film cuts the world into shots from many angles; dance-on-stage is performed as a continuum from one angle. How can the two be successfully brought together into a truly hybrid and dynamic form? This workshop for filmmakers of all genres, and for choreographers and dancers with an interest in integrating film into their work, helps participants to digest and experiment with the components and methods which offer creative solutions: camera angles and movements, non-stage locations, re-choreography into fragments with "sticky ends," superimposition and more. Film clips illustrating critical concepts (including the instructor's own work) will be screened and discussed prior to considerable hands-on practice with camera and lights in a studio where dance performer Linda K. Johnson will serve as on-camera performer. Appropriate for filmmakers and dancers of all levels. Documentary and fiction film directors are especially encouraged, as the dance film genre presents the opportunity to strengthen compositional skills around structure, texture and movement, in an environment where plot, dialog, and rhetoric are not the main repertoire. Equipment provided. 3 Sessions.

Cine Rent West Presents: Movie Camp

    Posted 3/9/09

Crafting a screenplay like Woody Allen, inspiring directors like Steven Spielberg, or delivering lines with flair like Tom Hanks doesn't happen overnight, but for many Portland-area teens it can start with Movie Camp.

This summer, Cine Rent West, Portland largest sound stage production facility presents: Movie Camp. Three separate camps with a focus on acting, screenwriting and filmmaking. While each group meets separately, at the end of camp, the kids collaborate together and apply their newfound skills to produce an original short film, which will be shown at a red carpet premier on July 31st.

In addition to a unique and fun summer experience, the goal of Movie Camp is to build young people's skills in their favorite area of interest: acting, writing or directing. "The kids do it all- from brainstorming movie ideas, story boarding, and writing a script to acting, shooting scenes, and editing," says Camp Director Samantha Martin. "Then at the end of the summer they leave with a new experience, new friends and a finished product they did themselves."

Using state-of-the-art technology, lessons from industry professionals, field trips to live film sets, each camp will allow teens to take something of value from this experience. Dynamic interaction between the campers and a team of distinguished faculty, and special celebrity guests facilitates insightful dialogue and fuels the hands-on involvement in the film production process. "The knowledge and skills these kids learn and can then apply during camp is amazing," says Cine Rent West owner, Chris Crever. "We provide the equipment and instruction, the kids take the reins and explore their unlimited creative potential"

For teens more interested in the music industry, Cine Rent West is offering "The Making of a Music Video" from August 3-14, 2009. Campers will meet with several local bands and select one to produce a video for. They will experience how to story board, how to shoot in sync, experiencing hands on editing, working with visual and sound effects, and how to work with a client.

Each camp is limited to 15 kids and runs from July 6th-August 14th with each camp session lasting two weeks.
